
The concept was good in the beginning, being a "voice" for retirees and their issues. Then, the magazine broadened its base to include anyone over the age of fifty. Meaning a lot of seniors are still actively working.
AARP asks its members to show up for rallies against utility rate hikes. Doesn't work. Electric and water bills go up anyway. AARP backs the nursing home lobby vs the patient and the families involved in reducing negligence in nursing homes.
AARP is taking to the bank any profits that it makes, using the baby-boomers as their supply for funding. When, the baby-boomers ask in turn for the backing of AARP against nursing home abuse, they politely back away.
We canceled our membership a few years ago. Lot of money for nothing. No voice for us there.
My husband and I keeping getting invitations to join (I assume), and I burn them without ever opening.
I have not seen any evidence that they have actually done anything for the betterment of the senior citizens, and wondered what they did with the membership fees.
Guess now I know - pocket them just like many other "do gooder" organizations.
